About the event

It was good to see so many of you at our most enjoyable afternoon of entertainment from Godalming Operatic Society (GOS) on Sunday when they presented a concert version of their recent production of Patience, a witty satire on the aesthetic movement epitomised by Oscar Wilde. We were reminded of the huge success of this opera when it was first produced and that its run, as well as box office takings, exceeded that of all G and S operas except The Mikado. It certainly proved to be a great choice for our audience on Sunday in a concert which captured the great musicality, drama and humour of Patiencewith some great performances and rousing choruses. It was very useful to have a narrative as part of the performance which set the context for the songs and kept us abreast of how the story was unfolding without including unnecessary detail, no easy task. We were also treated to the lost song from Patience sung by the Duke: Though men of rank may useless seem.

As a Society we are very fortunate to have such strong links with GOS and look forward to their return visit next year to present The Yeomen of the Guard and wish them well in their forthcoming Centenary year. Further information about GOS activities is available at: https://godalmingoperatic.org/
