The Grave of Richard D’Oyly Carte

Richard D'Oyly Carte died in 1901 and he is buried at St Andrew's Church at Fairlight East Sussex, next to the grave of his parents Richard and Eliza Carte.

The Cartes were of Norman descent and to avoid confusion over names, they christened their son Richard D'Oyly Carte; D'Oyly is another Norman surname.

Richard Carte was a flautist and a partner in an instrument making company, Eliza (nee Jones) was the daughter of a clergyman who strongly disapproved when his daughter eloped with Richard. Their sons Richard and Henry both started their working careers in their father's firm.

Eliza collapsed and died on the first day of a holiday in nearby Hastings, which probably is the reason why she and later her husband and son are buried at Fairlight.
