We welcomed back

Martin Milnes

to high soprano and his performance at the Brighton Festival Fringe earned him an award and this tribute from The Brighton Evening Argus - "Martin Milnes received a deservedly ecstatic reception of joy and rapture unconfined." He has recently been appointed Head of Drama at the MAAD Studio - a performing arts studio run for professionals by professionals in central London.

Martin directed the first professional revival of THE GRAND DUKE, in the Finborough Theatre in 2012 to much acclaim; the star studded cast included our own Richard Suart, Bruce Graham. This was Gilbert and Sullivan's last operetta, originally staged at the Savoy Theatre in 1896.

His programme of G&S pieces, both male and female, at times concurrently, encompassed most of the Operas:-

The Judge's Song (Trial by Jury)

Ida was a twelvemonth old (Princess Ida)

I cannot tell what this love may be (Patience)

Minerva (Princess Ida)

My name is John Wellington Wells (Sorcerer)

Would you know the kind of maid (Princess Ida)

The sun whose rays (Mikado)

Come bumpers aye ever so many (Grand Duke)

In a contemplative fashion (Gondoliers)

The hours creep on apace (HMS Pinafore)

Society has quite forsaken (Utopia Ltd)

Poor wand'ring one (Pirates of Penzance)

By the mystic regulation (Grand Duke)

So ends my dream (Grand Duke)

Excerpts from Trial by Jury

The only operas not represented were Yeomen of the Guard, Iolanthe, and Ruddigore.

The accompaniment by John Howells rounded off this excellent programme.
