The Royal English Opera House

 Introduction

Peter has in his collection a Monograph of The Royal English Opera House in Cambridge Circus; this is a fascinating description of this exceedingly ambitious enterprise by Richard D'Oyly Carte, which I believe surpasses that of the earlier Savoy Theatre. Both Gilbert and Sullivan were substantial investors.

It featured groundbreaking structural design, stage equipment and the use of electricity for both lighting and machinery. It is a great shame it did not prove to be a commercial success for him; I wonder what of the ground breaking features were lost in the subsequent modifications.

Walter Emden turned it into a grand music hall and renamed the Palace Theatre of Varieties. managed by Charles Morton, known as the 'Father of Music Halls', who made it into a successful enterprise.

The name of the theatre was finally changed to The Palace Theatre in 1911.
