The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Sussex

The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Sussex

On Sunday 14th April 2013, our presentation was
"D'Oyly Carte to Dustin Hoffman"
with our Guest Speaker
Cynthia Morey

Cynthia a former Principal Soprano with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company is one of our Vice Presidents, a good friend indeed to this Society. She is President of the London Gilbert & Sullivan Society, and helped our Chairman Melvyn Tarran to arrange the Tribute Concert to the late John Fryatt at Lewes in 2012. I never saw her in D'Oyly Carte, but I well remember seeing her for Sadler's Wells at The Coliseum in very lively operettas such as Offenbach's La Vie Parisienne, Orpheus in the Underworld, and La Belle Helene. "A wicked sense of humour" has frequently been attributed to her, and rightly so: she was often teamed with John Fryatt, and they were devastatingly funny together, as well as singing delightfully. She went on to appear in many shows both in the West End and on Broadway.

Her 'Top Cs and Tiaras' was a hit on television, and she has directed many productions of Savoy operas and other musicals, both amateur and professional. But what is not always realised is that Cynthia is also a very talented writer, and author of several very readable books, most of which are autobiographical. I have two of them - 'Inclined to Dance and Sing,' and 'A Set of Curious Chances.' They are very entertaining!
